Disaster Relief Trials – Alki Bathouse to White Center

Posted by: admin

Disaster Relief Trials (Cargo Bikes)
in West Seattle and White Center

Date: Sept 25, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location: Starting from the Alki Bathhouse in West Seattle

The Disaster Relief Trails is a disaster drill in the form of a cargo bike competition simulating an equipment and supply distribution from point to point. This year, the Seattle Disaster Relief Trials was held in partnership with Seattle Summer Parkways, Seattle Emergency Hubs and the Seattle Auxiliary Communication Service (ACS). Riders started on Alki as part of the Alki Summer Greenways event and made a 30 mile ride making deliveries and pick-up at other West Seattle Hubs.

In addition to the competition, there was a Family Bike ride component, where families followed the route and visited each station to learn something new about being prepared for disasters. Included were activities covering general disaster preparedness, how to prevent exposure, water purification and storage, home repair, and how solar energy can be used when the power grid goes down.

Jon Wright, Ercolini Hub Captain, arranged for the solar power display at his DRT stop so he could watch the Seahawks game as well as educate riders about solar energy. Thanks to West Seattle Natural Energy for the use of their solar trailer and their knowledge.

That is such a hard question. On one hand, I would want to know if I was at risk and maybe make so life changes, but on the other hand ignorance is bliss, and I’m all about ignorance!
