On Emergency Preparedness
Over the last few weeks, 2016 has started out with a bang for emergency preparedness events. Here are a couple which just happened, take a look at our calendar for events coming up.
Phinney Hub Radio Net Drill
Phinney Ridge Emergency Hub has been busy! They recently held a successful emergency drill in September 2015 and are planning a larger and much more ambitious as part of the citywide Hub event in June 2016 that will activate and engage their neighborhood and its residents. Plans for the June drill are already underway.
On Feb 27, 2016, the Phinney Ridge Emergency Hub Captain, David Baum and 8 volunteers went on air during their inaugural “neighborhood net” using walkie talkies and a GMRS base station to test out their emergency radio capabilities. The “check-in” locations for their radio communications test were created on a map:

The exercise allowed the team to come away with some important situational and location sensitive matters that will come into play in the event of an emergency. Hills and valleys, static and interference with the signal may be an issue during a disaster. Their discoveries in the drill shine a light on the implications for how a radio network can be organized and operate during an emergency. Cascadia: The Hidden Fire” and Hub presentation
Neighbors and business owners gathered in Beacon Hill to watch a documentary which illuminated homeowners, business owners and educators on earthquake hazards unique to the Cascadia region and how to effectively prepare for and survive them.
