SUMMARY:Ham Radio License Class (session 2 of 2)
DESCRIPTION:(the first session in this series is April 8) \nMembers of the Mike & Key Amateur Radio club hold amateur radio license classes several times a year. These classes normally are held on two consecutive Saturdays\, with the test on the afternoon of the second Saturday.  The classes have a very high pass rate on the exams (around 99%).  If you have thought at all about getting a ham license\, this is one of the easiest\, and surest\, ways to do so. \n  \nThere are classes scheduled in April in both Issaquah and Ballard. See the information below for specific dates and locations.  The classes are free\, but there is a $15 charge to take the test. That offsets the cost of administering the tests and sending the results to the FCC. \n  \nIf you wish to sign up for one of these classes\, please send an email to KL7WM@aol.com with the dates you wish to attend\, and your contact information. Daniel can also be reached by phone at 206-228-9274 \n

SUMMARY:Stop The Bleed Class
DESCRIPTION:Will you be ready? \nA person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Emergency responders will arrive as quickly as possible\, but bystanders are almost always there first. In the case of disaster and high casualty incidents\, emergency services are often spread thin. \nStop the Bleed! \nBlood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty events\, like mass shootings\, terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Significant external bleeding can also result from everyday events such as a motorcycle crash\, or industrial accident.  Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving. That’s why we’re teaming up with Harborview Medical Center\, the American College of Surgeons Washington State Committee on Trauma\, and Seattle and King County EMS  to ensure that: \n\nBystanders have skills and knowledge to provide immediate bleeding control to victims at the scene of an event.\nBleeding control supplies are located in all public gathering locations next to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).\nBleeding control education is incorporated into our schools and workplace.\nPeople know what to do in an active shooter situation

SUMMARY:Earthquake Home Retrofit Class
DESCRIPTION:Prior to 1980\, building codes did not require builders to secure houses to their foundations. This does not mean that every house built before 1980 is “unsecured”\, only that it was not a requirement. If your home is not properly secured\, it may be at increased risk of “slipping” off the foundation during an earthquake. Retrofitting involves bolting your home to its foundation and providing sheer/pony wall strength.\nLearn to become an informed consumer or how to do home retrofit yourself. Retrofit experts will show how to assess your home’s needs and how to use the City of Seattle’s pre-engineered Home Retrofit plans to permit and retrofit your home. No registration required. \nNo registration is required \nRainier Beach Library\, 9125 Rainier Ave S\, Seattle\, WA 98118

SUMMARY:Stop the Bleed
DESCRIPTION:This free 2.5 hour course teaches basic life-saving medical interventions\, including a brief Active Shooter preparedness presentation and methods to control bleeding. Taught by practicing trauma surgeons\, the course was developed in response to the call from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Hartford Consensus to improve survival during active shooter and other mass casualty events. In these circumstances\, survival begins with bystanders.\nUpon completion\, participants will be able to:\nUnderstand the principles of your response during an active shooter event.\nDescribe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.\nDemonstrate wound packing and learn about topical hemostatic dressings.\nExplain the rationale for early use of a tourniquet for life-threatening extremity bleeding.\nDemonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg. \nRegister at: https://depts.washington.edu/hiprc/stop-the-bleed-washington/

SUMMARY:Community SNAP Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The City of Seattle has created the Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare (SNAP) program to help your neighborhood get organized. We encourage people to not only prepare themselves and their families\, but to talk to their neighbors about how they will work together to make sure everyone in the neighborhood is safe and cared for. There is an online toolkit that provides practical step-by-step instructions on organizing as a neighborhood. The Seattle Office of Emergency Management can facilitate a discussion to help your neighborhood get organized. SNAP is a simple and flexible process that can be customized to meet the needs of your neighborhood

SUMMARY:Home Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Register at goo.gl… \nHelp reduce damage caused during an earthquake. Learn to become an informed consumer or how to do home retrofit yourself. Retrofit experts will show how to assess your home’s needs and how to use the City of Seattle’s pre-engineered Home Retrofit plans to permit and retrofit your home. \nPrior to 1980\, building codes did not require builders to secure houses to their foundations. This does not mean that every house built before 1980 is “unsecured”\, only that it was not a requirement. If your home is not properly secured\, it may be at increased risk of “slipping” off the foundation during a major earthquake. Retrofitting involves bolting your home to its foundation and providing sheer/pony wall strength \nRegister early space is limited!
